Overview of Vulva cancers

Vulva is the external female genitalia and is that part of the female reproductive system that can be seen externally during a gynae check-up. Vulvar cancer is a rare malignancy of the postmenopausal age group affecting females usually in the sixth or seventh decade of life and develops when there is an uncontrolled growth of cells lining the vulva

Symptoms

Symptoms include swelling in the region of vulva, ulcer formation, colour change, increased or decreased pigmentation, itching that does not go away, pain, sore etc.

Risk Factors

Risk factors include advancing age, HPV infection, history of condyloma acuminatum, smoking, long standing vulvar skin conditions like lichen sclerosus and squamous hyperplasia, pre-cancerous lesions of vulva and immunosuppression as in AIDS. HPV vaccination can prevent vulvar cancer.

Diagnosis of vulvar cancer

Diagnosis of vulvar cancer requires biopsy from the lesion to confirm malignancy. Imaging tests MRI/CT/PET CT are required to look for local or distant spread of the disease. Treatment

Treatment of early stage of vulvar cancer consists of local excision of the tumour along with a margin of surrounding healthy tissue. Advanced stage disease involving extensive areas of vagina, urethra, anus are treated with combination of radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
